As a security professional with over 17 years in the Information Technology industry my advice to you would be a resounding YES.

Invest in a proper secuity suite that includes: (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) that is preferably from one reliable vendor (like McAfee or Norton) and then ensure it is properly configured and kept completely up to date.

When you manually hit ''scan'' you are initiating the virus scanner and this is a manual scan.

Real-time scanning means that your scanner is ALWAYS scanning as you open files and download files... and you do not have to manually scan anything.

You should never have to run a scan of your system manually if things are set up properly... and as long as you learn enough about your security program to know how to properly respond to an alert if and when you are presented with one and you use your suite with safe browsing habits and common sense.. you will be way ahead of the pack.

Good Luck

real-time means its always scanning.

if bitdefender is not real-time its of little use.

try www.avast.com for a free one
If you are surfing in a safe manner, I wouldn't even recommend security suite. More software on computer = more code to exploit. I would recommend to change the antivirus. NOD32 or Norton will be some nice choice.
Try either AVAST or AVG Anti virus for free , both are good and
